Echinoderm research 1995
European Conference on Echinoderms (4th 1995 London, England)
This volume, the result of a meeting held to honour the retirement of Professor David Nichols, demonstrates the wide range of echinoderm research, from molecular genetics to palaeontology, in progress today. Many of the papers are on research themes in which David Nichols was a pioneer and is now an acknowledged authority. Few of the authors have not been influenced by his contribution to Science over recent years. We present this diverse collection of papers as a small testimonial to David"s influence and contribution to Echinoderm Biology.

Echinoderm is the common name given to any member of the phylum Echinodermata of marine animals. The adults are recognizable by their radial symmetry, include such well-known animals as starfish, sea urchins, sand dollars, sea cucumbers, as well as the sea lilies or "stone lilies".Echinoderms are found from the intertidal zone to the abyssal zone; the phylum contains.
Thyone and Havelockia are worldwide-distributed genera represented in the Western Atlantic by eight and three species, respectively.
In this paper, we describe two new shallow-water species from the Brazilian coast: Thyone waltinhoi sp. nov. and Havelockia oraneae sp. nov. These genera are very similar morphologically but the presence of subdivisions in Cited by: 1.
Introduction. Crinoids are a diverse, long-lived clade of echinoderms with a fossil record spanning nearly half a billion years and are represented by more than species living in marine ecosystems today (Hess et al., ).The geologic history of crinoids is revealed through a highly complete, well-sampled fossil record (Foote and Raup, ; Foote and Sepkoski, ).
A number of groups have non-feeding larvae, but with the exception of the larvae of feather stars, these forms appear to be descendents of feeding forms (Strathmann and Eernisse, ; McEdward, ). Echinoderm larvae are often relatively large as larvae go.

Because adults are easy to collect and maintain in lab, spawning can be reliably induced using several methods, and early stages are easy to rear, there is a rich literature on the biology of embryos and larvae of this species (a few examples:.
Echinoderms, in general, are animals requiring full strength seawater and they are intolerant of changes in salinity. Although many aquarists maintain their aquaria properly, often at least some tanks along the distribution and dealer network contain water that is hyposaline or have otherwise inappropriate conditions.
Current research is actually focusing on echinoderm endocrinology and the improved knowledge in terms of comparative physiology and biochemistry and specific mechanisms involved, including steroid metabolism and possible modulations by ED compounds, is providing a rather good background of necessary information (Janer et al.
; Lutz et al.The Permian-Triassic (P-T) boundary was the time of a mass extinction event that is largely considered as the most severe in the Phanerozoic. Chordata is composed of three subphyla, Vertebrata, Cephalochordata (Branchiostoma), and Urochordata (Tunicata). Careful analysis of a new 18S rDNA data set indicates that deuterostomes are composed of two major clades: chordates and echinoderms + Cited by:
